Longstriping gone crazy

I'm finally done with the cardigan using long-striping LitYarn I mentioned in my last post. It got to be a Stripes gone crazy, with some small mods. Since I wanted to get an in-between size between original sizes L and XL and couldn't get gauge on the suggested needle size because I once again knit much too loosely, I had to do quite a bit of swatch knitting and calculating beforehand. My gauge swatch on the suggested 3,5mm needles yielded 23,75 stitches per 4" instead of 25, which would have given 104cm bust instead of 98cm for size L. Since that was exactly what I wanted to achieve, I chose those - and ended up knitting even more loosely in the project, so that my cardigan turned out minimally bigger even than the original size XL. Since it grew lengthwise proportionally with that, I'm not too frustrated with that, though, because the added length works well with my 6'2". I can live with a bit of extra positive ease for that.

I'm rather happy with how the placement of color changes turned out. It was a good choice to place the medium one of the three shades of gray on top. This way, it was able to pick for each sleeve the color that was dominant in the opposite front. Despite the short-rows, there are no too-sudden changes between colors, as I had feared. And all shades work rather well with the red of the Teksrena I used for main color, I think.

What I'm really not all that happy with are all those pesky small irregularities in how the cardigan is cut. Unfortunately, the stripes are not the only asymmetric part of this pattern - there are more increases at the hip on one side than the other, back stripes go further to the front on one side than the other, and numerous other such things. Because of these, you have to block and block and block, and even then, it never hangs quite right. One side always wants to be longer than the other, and the whole cardigan is always somewhat twisting to the right. That rather takes the fun out of wearing the whole thing, as nice as it looks.

I also promised some words about the red yarn. Teksrena is, like the long-striping, from Lithuania and 100% wool and available from the same shops. It has a yardage of 350m/100g and the first thing I noticed were the wide range of natural colors available - natural white, natural black, three shades of natural gray and two of natural brown. Also, lots of bright dyed colors. Since it has similar yardage to the long-striping, that calls very much to combine them.

The overall appearance of the yarn is similar, too. The yarn is relatively rough and firm and fluffs up a bit when you bathe it, but still gives a rather nice stitch definition afterwards. I think it would be perfect for cable patterns and would love to try that. Only downside to that is that I'd have to use much smaller needles for that than I used here, and my fingers hurt rather easily when I knit with small needles. The main difference with the multi-colored LitYarn is that the Teksrena is more constant: it has less spinning errors and variations in thickness. On the whole, I loved knitting with it and am already planning some more projects with it, both with and without the long-striping yarn.
