Krankenhaus & Co

Krankenhausprojekte!

Early in september, I finally went in for surgery - which should have already happend more than a year ago, but was again and again postponed by various doctors and numerous weirder and weirder, often contradicting diagnoses. So time came for a very special type of project - hospital projects!

A good hospital project has to be challenging enough to keep your mind off things, while at the same time having short enough pattern repeats and few enough rows that you can easily put it aside when something comes up and pick it up again without having to search your place in the pattern for a long time. And, preferably, it should use no more than two balls of yarn attached to the project at the same time so that you don't have to worry about something constantly rolling off the bed - especially when you are in for leg surgery and not allowed to get out of bed ;)

My first project was a strongly modified version of the 3-in-1-sweater - with different ribbing and a different yarn weight. Rather nice for a hospital project - especially the ribbing for the body took up quite a few boring hours. Unfortunately, I did not have enough of the dark brown yarn (Finkhof Merino, once again combined with Coburg Fox Sheep) with me, so it had to wait till home - where I, some time later, found out that the yarn I had intended for layer 3 contrast did not quite look so great with the rest, so it's now in hold again (both sleeves and layers 1+2 of body done) until I find a replacement I like.

The first project I actually finished during my hospital stay was a Flaming hat in - once again, suprise surprise - Finkhof Merino. This time my all-time favorite red (yep, I'm making too many projects in that, and yes, I already have some in the works again in that colorway, too) and (for the first time) purple. My first attempt at brioche! I love the fact that you can wear the hat both sides out, and it looks completely different either way. The construction of this hat is completely ingenious - both the brim and the decreases between the cables at the top. I don't think I've bought a pattern that was worth its money as much as this one in a very, very long time. Very much recommended.

My aunt liked this hat so much when she visited me in the hospital right after I finished this that she ordered her own, but since I didn't have the matching yarn with me, I couldn't start immediately. I didn't have anything to do at that moment - both books already read, one project done, the other out of yarn. Luckily, my aunt knows me too well and brought two skeins of sock yarn "instead of flowers, thought you'd like that better", so I spent the rest of the stay knitting her socks as a thank you. And, with the help of a phone with internet connection and my trusty tape measure, building my personal sock knitting cheat sheet for my own strange way of contructing socks and just about any size.

Finished socks with cat on day of return - tip of second sock was still missing, one week wasn't quite enough for everything, needed two hours more at home ;)

Since then, some more projects have grown well, but because of their size and the calculations necessary, they will still take a while, so it'll probably be at least next month until you hear from me again...
